Kremlin, «we are still waiting for answers from the USA on the renewal of the New Start»
The Kremlin continues to await a response from the United States to the Russian proposal on extending the parameters of the arms treaty for one year
strategic New Start, which expires on February 5th. This was stated by Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov. «Russia’s position is known. We continue to wait, but the deadline is about to expire. There was no response from the US side,” Peskov said.
«Creating a new treaty for strategic stability is a long and complex process», underlined the presidential spokesperson, commenting on the position of the USA, which would like to sign a new treaty. The Kremlin spokesperson recalled that «after the expiration of the New Start, a gap will emerge in the legal framework for strategic stability». Peskov noted that this failure is unlikely to be “in the interests of Russia, the United States or the entire world.”
The New Start is currently the only bilateral pact between the United States and Russia still in force regarding nuclear disarmament. In view of the imminent deadline, Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed extending it for another year. Although Russia formally suspended its participation in the treaty in March 2023, the limits imposed by the document remained in effect, albeit in the absence of verification mechanisms.
