[헤럴드경제=김영철 기자] Spotify, the world’s largest music streaming platform, has begun raising fees, starting with the United States.

On the 15th (local time), Spotify announced on its blog, “We are updating the rate plan,” and “An email with information about the rate update will be sent to premium (paid) subscribers in the United States, Estonia, and Latvia by next month.”

The email included information that starting in February, the monthly subscription fee would increase from $11.99 to $12.99.

Spotify explained, “Market-specific price adjustments reflect the value Spotify provides, allowing us to continue to provide the best experience and benefit artists.”

Spotify has raised the subscription fee by $1 in the United States in June 2024 to $11.99.

Spotify announced solid quarterly results in November last year, but its forecasts for future sales and subscriber numbers fell short of Wall Street’s expectations.

Founded in Sweden, co-founder Daniel Eck stepped down from his position as CEO earlier this month and started anew with Gustav Söderström and Alex Nordström as co-CEOs.

Last year, the company received criticism from the art world over its founder Eck’s investment in defense technology company Hellsing, and some musicians even launched a boycott movement to remove music from Spotify.
