A workshop on the protection of Sudanese monuments opened today in the Japanese capital, Tokyo, with the participation of experts from relevant Sudanese bodies as well as representatives of UNESCO and ISESCO. The workshop aims to develop practical projects for the protection and recovery of Sudanese antiquities in the post-war phase.
The workshop is organized with the support of the Tokyo National Research Institute of Cultural Properties.
In his opening speech, Ambassador Al-Reih Haidoub, Ambassador of Sudan to Japan, expressed the appreciation and thanks of the government and people of Sudan for the continued support extended by the Japanese government to Sudan.
He discussed Japan’s successful experiences in post-war reconstruction, emphasizing the importance of taking advantage of these experiences to protect and rehabilitate Sudanese archaeological sites.
The ambassador called for the workshop’s recommendations to include the organization of an international conference for the protection of Sudanese antiquities, especially after the systematic looting and destruction suffered by archaeological sites by the terrorist militia during the war.
