The Civil Defense of the Gaza Strip reported at least 45 people killed on Sunday during Israeli airstrikes in the Palestinian territory, revising upwards a previous toll of 33 deaths.
The Israeli army claims to have struck dozens of Hamas targets across the Palestinian territory during the day. Hamas accuses Israel of violating a ceasefire sponsored by US President Donald Trump, in force since October 10.
“At least 45 people were killed as a result of Israeli airstrikes on several locations in the Gaza Strip,” said Mahmoud Bassal, spokesperson for Civil Defense, a rescue service operating under the authority of Hamas.
Four hospitals in the Palestinian territory confirmed this toll of 45 deaths to AFP, saying they had received dead and injured people.
Dozens of injured people were also treated by these hospitals. The Israeli army told AFP it was verifying reports of the strikes.
Among the victims are, according to Mr. Bassal, six people killed when an Israeli strike targeted “a group of civilians” in the town of Zuwaida (center).
He also reported two other Palestinians, including a journalist, killed in the western part of this city.
Two separate strikes also killed six people, including children, near Nuseirat (center) and injured 13 others, he said.
He also reported a woman and two children killed in a drone strike on a tent sheltering displaced people north of Khan Younes (south).
In the evening, the Israeli army announced that it would cease its strikes and resume the application of the ceasefire.
Given the restrictions imposed on the media in Gaza and the difficulties of access on the ground, the AFP is not able to independently verify the information from the different parties.
