Addressing the Healthcare Worker Shortage: An Innovative outreach program

Bridging the Gap: Inspiring Future Healthcare professionals

In response to a concerning decline in interest in healthcare professions, the Order of Medical Radiology Healthcare Technicians and Technical Health Professions (Tsrm e Pstp) of Milan, Como, Lecco, Lodi, Monza brianza, and Sondrio, have launched a proactive initiative. This program aims to engage high school students and showcase the rewarding career paths available within the allied health sector.

The collaborative effort, now in it’s second year, involves local schools such as ITIS Cartesio, Falk State Professional Institute, and Casiraghi High school. By partnering with the Rotary Club of Cinisello Balsamo-Sesto San Giovanni and the Municipal Administration of cinisello Balsamo, the Order seeks to highlight the diverse training and professional opportunities within the 18 professions represented by Tsrm e Pstrp orders. These professions offer specialized skills in technical health, rehabilitation, and prevention.

The Declining Interest in Healthcare Careers: A National Concern

In recent years, the attractiveness of healthcare courses of the health professions has fallen considerably, proposing important deficiencies in sectors of care and vital care for citizens, notes Diego Catania,President of the Order. This decline poses a significant threat to the National Health Service, potentially leading to critical shortages in essential healthcare roles.

The need for qualified healthcare professionals is more critical than ever. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in healthcare occupations is projected to grow 13 percent from 2021 to 2031, adding about two million new jobs. This growth is substantially faster than the average for all occupations, highlighting the urgent need to address the declining interest in these fields.

Interactive Engagement: A New Approach to Recruitment

The Order is adopting a dynamic approach to attract the next generation of healthcare workers. Alessia Zanini, Secretary of the Order and Contact person of the Orientation working Group, explains, After the lucky experience of last year, thanks to the synergy with the Rotary Club and with the Municipality of Cinisello Balsamo, we decided to re -propose this important moment of dialog.

This year’s program features interactive quizzes and information sessions, allowing students to engage directly with both seasoned professionals and recent graduates. This firsthand exposure provides valuable insights into the training experience and the professional realities of working in healthcare.

I believe it is indeed a winning approach, as there can be no better ‘promotion’ for our professions that the enthusiasm of those Difficulty, each of us can testify to the gratifications of a working path that relates to the community and which contributes to changing the lives of many people for the better.

Alessia Zanini, Secretary of the Order and Contact person of the Orientation Working Group

Community Support: A Vital Component

The success of this initiative relies heavily on the support of the local community. Nicola Perrino, President of the Rotary Club Cinisello-Sesto San Giovanni, emphasizes the importance of investing in the future of young people:

I would like to thank the order and the municipal administration for their sensitivity in promoting initiatives such as this. Rotary is strongly engaged in the support and training of young people and can only support them in the choice of a professional future aimed at service of the other and the well -being of society.

Nicola Perrino, President of the Rotary Club Cinisello-Sesto San Giovanni

the presence of Cinisello Balsamo Mayor Giacomo Ghilardi and the Municipal Councilor for Education and Training further underscores the community’s commitment to fostering the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Looking ahead: Addressing the Root Causes

While these outreach programs are a crucial step in addressing the healthcare worker shortage,Diego Catania emphasizes the need for broader systemic changes. We cannot afford to continue on this path, because the new generations represent the lifeblood of our National Health Service. Therefore, it is necessary to intervene on several fronts: on the one hand, working on the economic and career recognition of the professionals; on the other, intervening on social recognition, through targeted initiatives of dialogue and awareness.

Moving forward, efforts must focus on improving the economic prospects and career advancement opportunities for healthcare professionals, as well as raising public awareness of the vital role they play in society. By addressing these challenges, we can ensure a enduring and thriving healthcare workforce for the future.
