Kenya Backs Morocco Sovereignty | Latest News

After supporting the autonomy plan, Kenya is taking action. Nairobi’s ambassador to Morocco, Jessica Muthoni Gakinya, visited Laâyoune two days ago as part of an official trip where she was welcomed by the wali of the region, Abdessalam Bikrate.

This trip to explore the region is far from accidental. The ambassador went to the capital of the Moroccan Sahara at the head of a delegation made up of investors and bankers.

This gesture is a continuation of Kenya’s turnaround in the Sahara affair. It is also a de facto recognition of Moroccan sovereignty. The country officially supported the autonomy initiative on May 26 as the only sustainable approach to resolving the conflict.

This position was announced in a joint statement published on the occasion of the visit of the Kenyan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, where he inaugurated alongside his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, the Kenyan embassy in Rabat.

Since then, Nairobi has distanced itself from the Polisario of which it was one of the great allies in Africa. A tradition that current President William Ruto has broken since he came to power. The latter has initiated a policy of rapprochement with Morocco.

Exchanges of visits have been going on for months and have become more and more numerous recently. The delegated president of the Superior Council of the Judiciary, Mohammed Abdennabaoui, received his Kenyan counterpart, Renson Ingonga, on November 13, a few weeks before the visit of the Minister of Mines and the Blue Economy, Hassan Ali Joho.
