Details of Golden’s Contract
The contract includes a unique clause: should Golden leave to coach in the NBA, his buyout is significantly reduced. It starts at $3 million on April 15, 2026, decreasing to $2 million by March 31, 2028, and further to $1 million by March 31, 2029. After that date,there is no buyout required.
“It’s more of just kind of keeping that prospect perhaps available down the road,” Golden said.

He emphasized his commitment to the Florida Gators: “So, you gotta make sure that you give yourself a little bit of opportunity that way, you know, in terms of the college game, like, I’m here at Florida for a long time.You know, it’s everything I need, everything my family needs. And, you know, I don’t necessarily anticipate the NBA being something that’s super enticing anytime soon. But again, like, just the optionality is something that’s notable to us, but I’m a Gator for a long time.”
At 39, Golden is the youngest coach to win a national championship as Jim Valvano in 1983. He boasts a 76-33 record over three seasons with UF. His data-driven approach has led some to believe he could succeed in the NBA.
