  • Florida basketball coach Todd Golden’s contract extension includes a decreasing buyout for NBA teams.
  • The buyout for other college teams is considerably higher than the NBA buyout.

Details of Golden’s Contract

The contract includes a unique clause: should Golden leave to coach in the NBA, his buyout is significantly reduced. It starts at $3 million on April 15, 2026, decreasing to $2 million by March 31, 2028, and further to $1 million by March 31, 2029. After that date, there is no buyout required.

“It’s more of just kind of keeping that prospect perhaps available down the road,” Golden said.

Conversely, if another college team seeks to hire Golden, the buyout is substantially higher. It begins at $16 million before April 15, 2026, reducing to $11 million before March 31, 2027, then to $4 million, $3 million, $2 million, and finally $1 million by March 31, 2031.

Golden’s Perspective

According to Golden, the NBA buyout clause is about “just kind of keeping that opportunity potentially available down the road.” He added, “That’s not necessarily something that I’m thinking about right now a whole lot. But, you know, these contracts, it’s like real-life stuff, right?”

He emphasized his commitment to the Florida Gators: “So, you gotta make sure that you give yourself a little bit of opportunity that way, you know, in terms of the college game, like, I’m here at Florida for a long time. You know, it’s everything I need, everything my family needs. And, you know, I don’t necessarily anticipate the NBA being something that’s super enticing anytime soon. But again, like, just the optionality is something that’s notable to us, but I’m a Gator for a long time.”

At 39, Golden is the youngest coach to win a national championship as Jim Valvano in 1983. He boasts a 76-33 record over three seasons with UF. His data-driven approach has led some to believe he could succeed in the NBA.

While the NBA frequently enough hires from within its ranks, there are exceptions. The Los Angeles Lakers recently considered UConn’s Dan Hurley before he chose to remain in college.

Other Florida coaches have transitioned to the NBA. Lon Kruger, who took UF to its first Final Four in 1994, coached the Atlanta Hawks and was an assistant with the New York Knicks. Billy Donovan, who won two national titles with UF, coached the Oklahoma City Thunder and chicago Bulls. Donovan will enter the Naismith Basketball Hall of fame on Sept. 6.
