A man drowned late Monday afternoon after falling into the water near the Viaduc from the De, Feyssine Device in Villeurbanne. He was with a friend at the time of the incident and never resurfaced.
His friend alerted emergency services, and divers located the body in the early evening.
The site, nicknamed “Hawaii-sur-rhône” because of the wave formed by the Fyssine threshold waterfall, is popular with freestyle kayakers. Though, authorities emphasize that it is indeed extremely dangerous for inexperienced individuals due to strong currents and swirls.
Tragically, this is the second drowning at this location in recent days. Last Tuesday, another man drowned while attempting to rescue his dog after it entered the water.
“it is a dangerous site, where swimming is not only not recommended but prohibited.”
