In Iran, protests against poor economic conditions are becoming increasingly violent. Several people have reportedly already been killed. The leadership in Tehran wants to enter into dialogue. An online post from US President Trump is making people sit up and take notice.
US President Donald Trump shows willingness to intervene in the protests in Iran. “When Iran shoots and violently kills peaceful protesters, as is its wont, the United States of America will come to their aid. We are standing tall and ready,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
According to consistent reports from Iranian media and human rights groups, several people have been killed in protests that have been going on in Iran for days over the tense economic situation. The semi-official Fars news agency and the human rights group Hengaw reported deaths in the western Iranian city of Lordegan. Hengaw also reported another death in the central province of Isfahan.
State television reported on Thursday that a member of the paramilitary Basij militia was killed in the town of Kuhdasht in the western Iranian province of Lorestan. The Revolutionary Guards accused protesters of being responsible for his death, while human rights group Hengaw said the man was a protester and was killed by security forces.
Tehran announces dialogue
The unrest began on Sunday with protests by shopkeepers against high inflation and the collapse of the currency and has since spread across the country. According to activists, demonstrators took to the streets again on Thursday. The setting was Marwdasht in the southern province of Fars. The activist news agency HRANA reported late Wednesday evening that there was a heavy presence of security forces in several cities. In some cases there were arrests, shootings and clashes.
In response, the Iranian government announced a dialogue with representatives of unions and traders. The unrest hits the leadership in Tehran at a critical time. The country’s economy is suffering from the regime’s policies, and the inflation rate is over 40 percent.
