INTA & Sugarcane Innovation | XXIV Meeting Highlights

by Archynetys Health Desk

This meeting constitutes one of the main spaces for technical-scientific exchange in the sugar-alcohol sector, where professionals, researchers and technicians present advances aimed at improving the productivity and sustainability of sugarcane cultivation.

In this framework, INTA Famaillá presents a series of works that address strategic problems for the region. Among them, the evaluation of pre- and post-emergence herbicides for the control of Rottboellia cochinchinensis stands out, an emerging weed that represents a growing threat to sugarcane production systems in Tucumán. The study analyzes different chemical alternatives available in the country under local conditions, with the aim of optimizing their management.

Likewise, research on in vitro mutagenesis as a tool to increase genetic variability in sugarcane is presented in poster format. Through the application of the EMS mutagen on in vitro cultures, it was possible to generate plants with improved agronomic characteristics, providing new perspectives to the genetic improvement program.
Another area of work is the concept of “smart cane”, focused on evaluating the potential for biological inhibition of nitrification in different varieties. This capacity would reduce nitrogen losses in the system, optimize fertilization and open new lines of selection in future varietal developments.

In line with the incorporation of precision technologies, results are presented on the use of variable doses of nitrogen in different intrabatch environments. This approach integrates setting tools, geopositioned soil analysis and site-specific management, with the aim of improving efficiency in the use of inputs.

For its part, INTA Yuto contributes a study on the edaphic variability and the spectral response of the crop in the provinces of Salta and Jujuy. The work demonstrates how differences in soils condition yield and how the use of satellite images and vegetation indices allows identifying productive environments, laying the foundations for more efficient crop management.

The Argentine Society of Sugarcane Technicians (SATCA), founded in 1982, brings together specialists from the sector and promotes the dissemination of knowledge and technological advances. Through its annual meetings, it is consolidated as a key area to strengthen productive innovation and the sustainability of agribusiness, especially in the NOA region.

INTA’s participation in this event reaffirms its role as a central actor in the generation of applied knowledge, aimed at responding to the current and future challenges of sugarcane production.
