Ukraine has stepped up attacks against power stations in Russia. Since 14 October, five substations near Moscow have been hit by bomb attacks, writes BT
The attacks are an attempt to shake both the military and the civilian population, says senior researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies, Flemming Splidsboel, to the newspaper.
– It is a good idea to attack them, they are stationary and have enormous importance for the civilian population.
According to Splidsboel, the attacks appear to be part of a new strategy:
– Right now the war is deadlocked, so the Ukrainians’ assessment is probably that attacks against transformer stations, refineries and railways will have a greater effect and cost less than operations at the front.

New attacks on Friday
According to the Ukrainian Navy, they carried out a successful missile attack against a thermal power plant in the Oryol region and an electrical substation in Novozybkov on Friday night. Both are significantly closer to the border with Ukraine than the targets in Moscow.
The two installations supplied Russian military enterprises in the region with electricity, writes the Ukrainian Navy on the Telegram messaging service.
– The fact that the facilities are put out of action is a serious blow to the occupiers, writes the navy in the post.
Threatens with new “Cuba crisis”
Russian authorities state that a power plant in the Oryol region was hit by Ukrainian drones on the night of Friday.
According to governor Andrei Klitschkov, the drone was shot down, but parts of it fell on the power plant. The incident led to power outages and problems with heating in parts of the city of Orjol.
The Russian Ministry of Defense reports that 130 Ukrainian drones were shot down over Russian territory during the night of Friday.
Neptune cruise missiles, part of Ukraine’s new defense system unveiled earlier this month, are said to have been used in the attack.

Eleven people are said to have also been injured in Russian attacks against Sumy in Ukraine on Friday, according to Ukraine’s rescue service. Four children are said to be among the injured.
A multi-storey block of flats, houses and infrastructure are among what was hit in the attack.
Since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has regularly attacked civilian infrastructure.
These days the temperature is dropping and Ukrainians are completely dependent on spare generators lasting and running. Ukraine is preparing for another cold winter of war as the invading forces bomb power and gas lines.
