The police, who are investigating suspicions of lobbying between local intelligent transportation system (ITS) operators and public officials, handed over the incumbent mayor and provincial council members to the prosecution on charges of receiving bribes or entertainment.
On the 31st, Ansan Sangnok Police Station announced that it had recently sent seven people, including the incumbent mayor, without detention on charges of bribery and solicitation.
Mr. A, the current local government head, is accused of receiving a bribe worth about 10 million won from Mr. B, who runs an ITS-related business, in exchange for continued business.
Mr. A denied the charges during the police investigation, but the police determined that he was guilty considering the consistent and specific statements of Mr. B and the provincial council member who delivered them.
Current provincial council member C and others are suspected of receiving bribes in the form of entertainment or donations worth hundreds of thousands of won and being directly or indirectly involved in the application for special adjustment grants related to the ITS project.
Among them, two people, including Rep. C, are also suspected of delivering confidential official documents to Mr. B.
Mr. D, a former public servant of Gimpo City who was sent on charges of solicitation, was found to have received millions of won in return for introducing public officials in charge of projects.
A police official said, “This case is a local corruption crime related to the local government budget for the ITS project,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to eradicate local corruption.”
