This acquisition was far above other candidates such as former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, an independent candidate, who earned 41.6 percent and Curtis Sliwa, a Republican candidate, who only received 7.1 percent of the support vote.

With these results, the Associated Press determined that Mamdani won the election and will serve as the new Mayor of New York City, replacing Eric Adams,

With this victory, Mamdani, who is only 34 years old, made history as the first Muslim mayor of New York City, also the first mayor of South Asian descent, and the first mayor born in Africa.

He will also be New York City’s youngest mayor in more than a century, when he is sworn in on January 1 next year.

Mamdani’s stunning victory was a victory for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, and gave credibility to Democrats who urged the party to embrace more progressive candidates.

At his victory party in Brooklyn, Mamdani’s supporters cheered and hugged each other, some even crying, after the Associated Press confirmed that Mamdani had been elected mayor of New York.

Mamdani’s X social media account posted a video of a subway train stopping at New York City Hall station, with a statement saying: “The next and final stop is City Hall.”
