The United States (US) and Israel’s war against Iran is now not only targeting military facilities, but has also spread to energy and water infrastructure. Oil depots and water desalination facilities have become targets of widespread conflict in the Middle East.

Summarized by detikcom from Aljazeera and AFP reports, Sunday (9/3/2026), Israel’s attack on oil storage depots and refinery facilities in Iran has caused a major fire in Tehran. Flames were seen rising in the Iranian capital.

The Israeli military claimed responsibility for the attack. They stated that Israel targeted oil facilities said to be affiliated with Iran’s armed forces.

Reports about the attack were also conveyed by Iranian state media. This was the first reported attack targeting the Islamic Republic’s oil infrastructure.

“We report that an oil depot south of Tehran was targeted by the United States and the Zionist regime,” wrote the official IRNA news agency.

The oil depot is located in an area close to a major oil refinery. But the ILNA news agency reported that the refinery facilities ‘suffered no damage from the military attack’.

The attack also hit another oil depot in the northwest region of Tehran. AFP journalists saw fire and smoke rising from the location.

Five Oil Facility Points

Reports say that five Iranian oil facilities were attacked by the US and Israel. The attack killed a number of people.

“Overnight, four oil depots and petroleum product transportation centers in Tehran and Alborz were attacked by enemy aircraft,” CEO of Iran’s National Petroleum Products Distribution Company, Keramat Veyskarami, told Iranian state television, reported by AFP, Sunday (8/3).

There was some damage at the location, but the fire was successfully controlled.

“Four of our personnel, including two oil tanker drivers, died in the incident,” said Veyskarami.

He said the energy infrastructure facility ‘suffered damage’ but ‘the fire was brought under control’.

After the attack, fire smoke was seen covering the Iranian capital overnight, and created a dark fog throughout the city when morning arrived. Residents reported the smell of burning was still in the air.

Veyskarami said Iran’s oil depots had “sufficient gasoline reserves”.

Attack on Water Desalination

Previously, the US military also attacked a desalination plant on Qeshm Island, Iran. The factory is used to convert sea water into drinking water.

Reported by Aljazeera, Saturday (7/3) Abbas Araghchi said the US action was a ‘blatant and desperate crime’. As a result of the attack, the water supply to villages in Iran was disrupted.

“The water supply in 30 villages has been disrupted,” Araghchi said.

“Attacking Iran’s infrastructure is a dangerous step with serious consequences. The US is setting this precedent, not Iran,” he added.

Not remaining silent, Iran responded to the attack by targeting a US military base located in Bahrain. Bahrain’s Interior Ministry said air raid sirens sounded, and it had appealed to residents to remain calm and seek shelter.

Meanwhile, Bahrain’s Interior Ministry said Iranian drone attacks had also damaged a water desalination plant. A number of residents were also injured by Iranian missile debris that fell on Bahrain.

“Iranian aggression randomly bombed civilian targets and caused material damage to a water desalination plant following attacks by drones,” Bahrain’s Interior Ministry said in a statement, reported by AFP.

The attack was carried out by Iran after Tehran previously accused the US of attacking one of its own desalination plants from a base in Bahrain.

On the other hand, Bahrain also revealed that 3 people were injured due to falling Iranian missile debris. Debris from the falling missile damaged a university building in the Muharraq area, Bahrain.

“As a result of Iran’s blatant aggression, 3 people were injured and material damage occurred to a university building in the Muharraq area after missile fragments fell,” the ministry said in a statement, referring to the island area northwest of Manama.
