UN urges US to investigate bombing of girls’ school in Iran

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has urged the United States to carry out “very quickly” an investigation into the attack on a school in the Iranian province of Minap that cost the lives of at least 165 students at the center. The United States admitted on Thursday in a preliminary report that its planes were responsible for the bombing of the school, which was located near an Iranian military base.

“What we have asked for, obviously, is a quick, transparent and impartial investigation, which we understand is what the United States has announced. We need it to be done very quickly and also make sure that there is accountability and reparation for the victims,” Türk said during an appearance at the headquarters of the UN agency in Geneva (Switzerland).

According to Iranian authorities, the attack on the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls’ school, which occurred on Saturday, the day the joint US-Israeli offensive against Iran began, cost the lives of more than 180 people, at least 165 of whom were girls.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth denied US responsibility for the attack, saying his military “never shoots civilians”. However, US military investigators stated shortly before Hegseth’s statements that it is very likely that the attack was the work of US aircraft, although their conclusion was not yet definitive, two military sources told Reuters.
