The German government commented on the corruption scandal in Ukraine
Berlin will closely monitor the development of the case and, if necessary, is ready to take action.
The German government spoke out about the corruption scandal in Ukraine, noting that it will closely monitor the course of events, but at the same time continues to trust Kyiv even against the backdrop of a resonant situation in the energy sector. This was stated by German government spokesman Stefan Cornelius in a comment to DW.
Berlin maintains close contact with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and supports him, even in such difficult circumstances, a government official said.
“According to our assessment, we are in the closest confidential contact with the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky and continue to be close, including in such situations,” Cornelius said.
At the same time, the representative emphasized that Berlin will closely monitor how the case develops.
“We will now monitor developments in this particular case. And, if necessary, we may have to take action in this case as well,” he said, adding that decisions will depend on the progress of the investigation.
Cornelius also expressed confidence in the ability of the Ukrainian government and anti-corruption agencies to effectively solve this problem by completing the investigation properly.
Separately, it was noted that the issue of corruption is not planned to be discussed within the framework of German-Ukrainian intergovernmental consultations, which are due to take place at the end of the year. The corresponding item is not included in the event program.
As you know, on November 10, NABU and SAPO announced a large-scale Operation Midas to identify corruption in the energy sector, including the laundering of Energoatom funds on a large scale.
Later it became known that the attackers had legalized funds through the office of former MP and now Russian Senator Andrei Derkach. Participants in the scheme laundered about $100 million.
