The match referee went to watch the images with his assistant before returning to the pitch. He chatted for a few seconds with the players and staff… before returning to the VAR screen at the request of the Fijian coach. On his return, the referee finally decided to give a red card… to the Belgian De Wannemacker.
The 16-year-old player had in fact deliberately pushed his opponent in response to his opponent’s unsanctioned tackle.
A system under test
The purple (or green) card is tested by FIFA during this U17 World Cup, as was already the case during the U20 World Cup. The system works on the model of field hockey.
During the match, each coach has the right to a video call, symbolized by a small purple card, if he considers that the referee made a mistake in a decisive phase (goal, penalty, red card, etc.).
If the referee agrees with the coach who made the request, he recovers the card and therefore his call on the video.
A former Anderlecht player used the green card for the first time at the U20 World Cup, the system soon to be tested in Belgium?
