The White House is reportedly creating distance between itself and the state of Israel after the latter launched a preemptive strike against Iranian nuclear facilities. The attack threatens to derail nuclear talks between the United States and Iran.

According to reports,Israel initiated an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities early on June 13,2025,in an attempt to halt Iran’s nuclear weapons development program. The strike occurred just days before the sixth round of nuclear talks between the United States and Iran, scheduled for June 15th.

In a released statement, US Secretary of State Rubio acknowledged that the US was informed in advance of Israel’s intentions.”We are not involved in attacks on Iran, and our number one priority is to protect the US troops in the region,” he stated, adding that Israel has framed the attack as “necessary for self-defense.”

“I want to be clear: Iran should not target US interests or personnel,” Rubio emphasized, without clarifying whether the US would support Israel in the event of retaliatory attacks.

President Trump stated on June 11th that he was withdrawing US personnel from the Middle East, citing concerns that the region “may become a hazardous place.” The United States has consistently maintained its stance against Iran possessing nuclear weapons.

Despite the escalating tensions, the US and Iran have announced plans to proceed with a meeting in Oman on June 15th. US envoy for the Middle East, Whitkov, is expected to meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Araguchi. The meeting’s status remains uncertain, and a spokesperson for Whitkov has not commented. A US official confirmed plans for discussions on the 15th but provided no further details.

President Trump offered a more ambiguous outlook on the talks, telling Fox News, “Iran cannot have nuclear weapons. We hope to return to the negotiation table. We have no choice but to watch what happens.”
