The Turkish authorities prevented a “newly elected” mayor who belongs to a pro-Kurdish party from assuming office.
According to Reuters, “The Turkish authorities announced a rerun of the elections in another region where the Justice and Development Party, led by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was defeated, which led to legal challenges and condemnation from the opposition.”
A document seen by Reuters, issued by the Election Commission in the city of Van, in the east of the country, showed that “the winner of second place from the Justice and Development Party will receive the mandate for the position of mayor,” which caused tension in Van province.
According to Reuters, “Hundreds of people gathered late yesterday evening, Tuesday, to protest against the decision in a few cities in southeastern Turkey and Istanbul, and the protesters chanted,” saying: “There is a coup in Van.”
According to the agency, “The pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party called on the authorities to withdraw from preventing its winning candidate, Abdullah Zeidan, from assuming office,” and said, “It will appeal other results that prevented its victory because of what it described as illegal voters.”
