From Munich crowd favorite to Canadian goalscorer: Thomas Müller is experiencing a new start with the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Thomas Müller spoke in an exclusive interview with Bayerischer Rundfunk about his move to the Vancouver Whitecaps – and described clear differences between Major League Soccer and the Bundesliga.
“I come into significantly more offensive situations here than in the Bundesliga,” Müller told BR. “In the Bundesliga the defense is tighter and harder. There’s a little more space here.” It is precisely this space that particularly suits him as a “space interpreter”. The record of the former FC Bayern record player: In seven games he scored eight goals and provided four assists. “Yes, it runs – and runs,” said Müller.
The 2014 world champion described his move as an experiment. “I had a good feeling from the start,” he said. “We want to play active football, not just counterattack. That’s my football.” Müller also considered Sydney in Australia as an alternative. The decision was made because of the flight duration: “Ten hours of direct flight a day or 24 hours – and you have to go through three stops… ‘Yes, then do Vancouver’ – so the debate was quickly put to rest, everyone agreed on that.”
About his new home, Müller said: “When you come to Vancouver, you immediately have a positive feeling. You come to a beautiful city with a lot of green, a lot of water, the mountains.” About the pressure he said: “There is less pressure here. I even miss it a little, but it’s also nice to live more relaxed.”
“I didn’t come here to become the superstar of Vancouver,” said Müller. “But I don’t object to it either.” His new trademark is his beard. “I’ve never had a beard before, but now I’m just going to try it,” he said. He also appreciates the newfound time: “I even have time for personal care now.”
About his family and friends in Bavaria, Müller said: “I don’t like the word ‘miss’. You always have a choice. And I consciously decided on the adventure.” At the beginning of the interview he said with a grin: “Radio Müller also broadcasts here.” About his knowledge of English, he said: “I am brave enough to express myself in grammatically awkward English. I also like to be corrected because I want to get ahead.”
