St. Luke’s Foundation Moving: New Location Details

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The St. Luke’s Foundation, an outgrowth of the former St. Luke’s Hospital that closed in 1999, announced plans Wednesday to move its headquarters from the sixth floor of the historic former hospital to a new building a few blocks away.

The new headquarters will be on what is now vacant property at Woodland Avenue and East 110th Street in Cleveland’s Woodland neighborhood.

The foundation said that later this month it will invite architecture firms to submit qualifications to design the building and surrounding outdoor spaces. Then in November, it plans a design competition with input from community members.

The new ground-level headquarters are envisioned as a way to improve accessibility and community connections.

Terry Allen, chair of the foundation, said in a letter to partners and stakeholders that the foundation will “honor and respect our historical presence in the community.” It will be next to the Woodhill Choice Neighborhood redevelopment.

“Our headquarters will stand within the eyesight of the former St. Luke’s Hospital and St. Luke’s Campus, a site that represents both legacy and resilience,” Allen said.

The foundation was created after St. Luke’s Medical Center was sold to the private healthcare provider Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp. in 1997. The original assets included about $47 million from an endowment and $25 million from the purchase.

It has handed out more than $190 million in grants since its inception, focusing on closing health inequities in the neighborhoods surrounding the former hospital.

The hospital’s history dated to 1894, when Cleveland General Hospital was founded at Woodland Avenue and East 20th Street, according to the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History. It was renamed St. Luke’s Hospital in 1906 and moved to Shaker Boulevard and East 116th Street in 1927.

After the hospital’s closing in 1999, the landmark building was redeveloped to include senior housing, a charter school, a health clinic and office space.
