Music streaming giant spotify is rolling out lossless audio streaming for premium subscribers in Germany and Austria. The Swedish company announced that users will soon be able to enjoy music in the FLAC codec at 24-bit/44.1 kHz quality. The update is currently being deployed.
The move comes after years of anticipation and speculation about Spotify’s plans to offer higher-quality audio. Previous reports suggested a new subscription tier woudl be required for lossless streaming, but Spotify has opted to make it available to all premium subscribers at no additional cost.
Spotify aims to provide lossless quality for “almost every song” in its library. The feature will be accessible across various devices, including smartphones, desktop apps, and devices supporting Spotify Connect.Support for Sonos and Amazon Echo speakers is slated to arrive in the coming months.
Activating Lossless Streaming
Users will need to manually enable lossless streaming within the Spotify app. In the mobile app, this can be done by tapping the profile picture, navigating to “Settings and data protection,” and then selecting “media quality.” Alongside existing quality options, a “Lossless” option will appear. Users can configure separate settings for streaming over wi-Fi, mobile data, and downloads.
Spotify promises “almost every song” on Spotify in Lossless quality.
While some competing services like Amazon Music and Tidal have offered lossless streaming for several years, Spotify’s entry into the market is expected to further drive adoption of high-quality audio. The perceived difference in audio quality depends on individual hearing capabilities and playback equipment. Spotify recommends using lossless streams with Bluetooth headphones. Keep in mind that lossless audio files are larger, which may impact data usage.
Subscription Price Increase
It’s certainly worth noting that Spotify recently increased its premium subscription prices in Germany. The “Premium individual” plan now costs 13 euros per month, while the “Duo” plan is priced at 18 euros, and the “Family” plan at 22 euros. Students can subscribe for 7 euros per month. The lossless option is not available in the basic subscription tier.
