Roubaix Mayor: Identity Theft Investigation

Alexandre Garcin was elected mayor of Roubaix last December after his ex-boss, Guillaume Delbar, resigned, made ineligible by the courts which found him guilty of organized gang fraud. And if the former deputy for the ecological transition of the municipality only put on the scarf three months before the municipal elections of March 2026, he intends to keep it. Except that he is clearly not the only one to campaign under his own name, a malicious digital namesake having decided to approach Roubaisiens via Facebook messaging.

Alexandre Garcin (DVD) launched into the municipal campaign for Roubaix a little hurriedly, because if he had not been dismissed by the courts, the former mayor would have returned there. In short, he hangs up the wagons as best he can, launched a website and maintains a Facebook page with little following, it must be admitted. His lack of notoriety, the sauces of his predecessor and the competition from the king of the punchline, LFI deputy David Guiraud, will not help him.

“Remarks, concerns or proposals”

However, an unknown person is campaigning for him, at least on Facebook. In his name, with his name and with his photo, stitched Voice of the North. It is Alexandre Garcin himself who denounces him on his (real) Facebook page: “It has been reported to us that a person pretending to be me is currently sending messages via Messenger”, alerts the DVD candidate. A usurper who contacts “citizens” in a private message via the Messenger application to ask them to share their “comments, concerns or proposals”.

It’s even stranger because there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with it (apart from, of course, pretending to be the mayor). The real Alexandre Garcin also claims that his evil namesake is trying to collect “personal information.” He insists on the fact that he “never contacts citizens via Messenger for this type of action”, urges caution and recommends reporting “immediately the fraudulent profile to Facebook”.

We do not know at this stage who is pretending to be the candidate, and especially what their motivations are. Contacted by 20 MinutesAlexandre Garcin claims to have done what was necessary to have the account blocked by Facebook, which appears to be the case. The elected official believes that it may simply be a “grazer” trying “to hook potential victims by using the identity of a public person”. If in doubt, he still intends to file a complaint.
