The Renault group finds itself at the heart of a dispute in Germany after a decision by the Munich regional court ordering the suspension of the marketing of two models, the Clio and the Mégane, on the German market. At issue: an alleged violation of a patent held by the American group Broadcom, according to the economic magazine WirtschaftsWoche.
Renault immediately contested the decision. “The marketing ban decided by the court only concerns Germany and is limited to two models (Clio and Mégane) of the Renault brand. It is important to note that this ban will only be effective after certain conditions have been met by Broadcom, which is not the case today,” the group said in a statement on Friday.
The Renault group has decided to appeal
The measure can only come into force if Broadcom pays a deposit of several million euros, a condition required by the German jurisdiction. Renault has decided to appeal, although this procedure does not have suspensive effect in Germany, meaning the decision could apply once the conditions are met.

The manufacturer also specifies that it has initiated two actions to invalidate the patent in question. “We also highlight that Renault has initiated two actions to invalidate the patent concerned, which we believe will be successful,” added the French car manufacturer, without further comment. Broadcom had already attacked Volkswagen in 2018 for patent infringement, a dispute which ended with an amicable settlement, according to the business press.
