For now, there’s no reason for PlayStation fans to panic about a delayed PS6 debut. According to the leaker “Moore’s Law Is Dead”, Sony still has another year before a decision has to be made about a possible postponement of the release date. Production of the APU can begin without the current shortage of memory chips interrupting the manufacturing process.

Excessive memory prices could weigh on the gaming industry for years to come. Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson recently reported that Sony is considering postponing the PS6’s release date. However, in a new podcast, the technology enthusiast from the YouTube channel “Moore’s Law Is Dead” (MLID) said: “The decision to postpone the release of the console has not yet been made.”

How long can Sony wait for storage prices to fall?

According to the well-known leaker, PlayStation still has time before plans have to be fundamentally changed. He revealed that the agreement with AMD to manufacture the suspected “Orion APU” remains on schedule until mid-2027. According to MLID, Sony will not have to determine how much DRAM the system will ultimately receive until later in the production cycle.

Interestingly, Tom Henderson only commented on the latest rumors about the release of the PS6 on social media with a brief “Lol”. But although this reaction suggests a contradiction, MLID did not dispute Henderson’s report on the merits. Insider Gaming’s editor-in-chief simply noted that discussions have begun about pushing back the console’s release window.

MLID doesn’t deny that Sony and Microsoft are concerned about what impact the current memory shortage will have on the PS6 or the next Xbox. Nevertheless, he notes that prices for DDR5 RAM could stabilize in time so as not to jeopardize the schedule. Companies can monitor developments for another year and then bring the systems onto the market in late 2027 or early 2028.

Demand for the PS6 could be muted

A postponement of the release date probably wouldn’t cause too much disappointment among fans. Analysts doubt that buyers are willing to purchase an even more expensive gaming system. There were already price increases for the PS5 and Xbox Series X, although memory prices only rose so dramatically later.

According to reports, the PS6’s specifications will support the RDNA 5 architecture, which should enable more efficient ray tracing and upscaling. Still, this jump in performance may not be enough to convince players to upgrade. So while the console manufacturers still have a certain breathing space, Valve doesn’t enjoy this luxury with the Steam Machine. Both Insider Gaming and MLID have already discussed that the mini PC’s planned first quarter release window is most likely at risk.
