The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) said that military planning has begun for a new mission to strengthen security in the Arctic region. This mission was launched after United States (US) President Donald Trump made protecting the region the centerpiece of his demands for Greenland.

“Planning is underway for a NATO awareness raising activity, called Arctic Sentry,” said Martin O’Donnell, spokesman for NATO’s Supreme Headquarters for Allied Forces in Europe, in a statement. AFPWednesday (4/2/2026).

“This activity will further strengthen NATO’s position in the Arctic and North Pole,” he said, without elaborating.

Trump’s threats against Greenland last month plunged the NATO alliance into its deepest crisis in years.

The unpredictable Trump has backed away from his desire to take over Greenland, Denmark’s autonomous region in the Arctic region, after claiming he had reached a “framework” agreement with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to ensure greater American influence.

NATO said it would take steps to increase the defense alliance’s presence in the Arctic region, after Trump used alleged threats from Russia and China to justify his ambition to take over Greenland.

Meanwhile, Denmark and Greenland have started talks with the US regarding the strategic island.

It is hoped the talks will involve renegotiation of the 1951 treaty governing the stationing of US troops in Greenland.

Danish Prime Minister (PM), Mette Frederiksen, said that NATO countries support a “permanent presence” in the Arctic region, including around Greenland, as part of efforts to increase security.
