BRASILIA (Reuters) – President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva called a meeting for this Sunday, at 8 pm, with the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, and the Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa , two sources with knowledge of the agenda told Reuters, which could decide the future of the Petrobras (BVMF:) command.

The meeting takes place after a week marked by noise surrounding the future of the state-owned company’s executive president, Jean Paul Prates. On Thursday, government sources said the resignation of the state-owned company’s CEO was likely in the coming days.

One of the sources interviewed this Sunday stated that the expectation is that Prates will not “arrive at the end of the week”.

The president of BNDES, Aloizio Mercadante, a historic PT member, was mentioned last week among those considered to take over Prates’ position.

Talks about the executive’s eventual departure gained strength after an interview with the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, amid debates about the payment of extraordinary dividends by the company.

At the same time, Lula has been bothered by the public clash between the company’s CEO and the Minister of Mines and Energy.

Jaroslav Bašta, a member of the SPD and candidate for the presidency in 2023, died at the age of 75 after a long illness. Barbora Šťastná, the spokesperson of the movement, informed about it. According to media information from the end of May last year, Bašta was in a serious condition in the hospital, and since about mid-May he excused himself from the meetings of the lower house for health reasons.

“A man of firm principles and one of the last active politicians of the pre-November dissent has left. A worthy, decent and noble person who did a lot for the SPD, the Czech Republic and its citizens. Honor to his memory,” said SPD spokeswoman Šťastná.

“I have always respected Jaroslav Bašta very much as a completely honest person. I am very sorry that he is no longer with us,” former president Miloš Zeman said on Facebook.

In the past, Bašta belonged to the leading ČSSD politicians. He held the parliamentary mandate for this party from 1996 to 2000.

Law Initiative Advances In Iowa That Could Arrest…

A bill in Iowa that would allow the state to arrest and deport some immigrants is raising anxiety among immigrant communities, making some wonder if they should leave.

The legislation, which is expected to be signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds, will make it a state crime for a person to be in Iowa if they have previously been denied entry or removed from the United States. The measure reflects part of a Texas law that is currently blocked in the courts.

Across Iowa, Latino and immigrant community groups are organizing meetings and informational materials to try to answer people’s questions. They are also requesting official statements from local law enforcement agencies, as well as face-to-face meetings.

As 80 people gathered in a Des Moines Public Library community room last week, community organizer Fabiola Schirrmeister pulled written questions from a can.

In Spanish, one asked, “Is it safe to call the police?”, another asked, “Can the Iowa police ask me about my immigration status?” and ”What happens if I am racially profiled?”

Erica Johnson, CEO of the Iowa Migrant Justice Movement, the organization hosting the meeting, sighed when one person asked,

Even After Years, Some Latvians In Great Britain…

#years #Latvians #Great #Britain #tend #feel #belong #Conversation #researcher #Kaprans #Article

Ieva Siliņa: Why do some people who left return, but others don’t?

Martin Kaprans: Mainly emotional factors work. Some people who come back count, but the turning point is mostly emotional. Latvian culture pulls, relatives left in Latvia pull, these are mostly non-economic factors.

At what point can a person be considered rooted in a foreign land?

There are people who have lived in Great Britain for ten years and still do not consider themselves to be part of this country. When writing my book “Latviesi tur. Mobility and rooting of Latvian emigrants in Great Britain at the beginning of the 21st century”, I interviewed many Latvians in Great Britain. I remember one informant who had gone to Great Britain during the crisis, in 2010. He invests all his income in his country house in Latvia, but at the same time he lives in Great Britain and emphasizes to me: “No, we are only here for a short time”, although in fact it is already the tenth year. However, he has greatly developed his rural property. Therefore, I want to say that rooting is a very subjective indicator,
