Iran admitted that one of its nuclear facilities was hit by attacks from the United States (US) and Israel on Sunday (1/3) local time. It is not yet known how much damage was caused by the attack and whether there is any danger to the community.

This, as reported Reuters And Al JazeeraMonday (2/3/2/2026), was delivered by Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Reza Najafi, at a meeting of the IAEA’s board of governors, which consists of 35 countries.

“They again attacked Iran’s peaceful and protected nuclear facilities yesterday,” Najafi told journalists attending the IAEA forum.

When asked by journalists which nuclear facility was hit, Najafi answered: “Natanz.”

However, Najafi did not explain further about the damage caused by the latest US and Israeli attacks.

This is the second time Natanz has been hit by an air strike. During the 12-day war in June last year, Natanz was one of three Iranian nuclear facilities — along with Fordow and Isfahan — hit by US and Israeli bombing.

The Natanz nuclear facility is located about 250 kilometers south of Tehran and is known as Iran’s largest uranium enrichment complex.

According to analysts, Natanz is used to assemble and develop centrifuges that function to convert uranium into nuclear fuel.

Based on information from the institution Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), Natanz has six above-ground buildings and three underground buildings. Two of the underground buildings can accommodate up to 50,000 centrifuges.

This facility has been operating since 2003 and according to the IAEA, Iran has enriched uranium to 60 percent purity at this site. By comparison, weapons-grade uranium is enriched to 90 percent.

Last year’s attack reportedly triggered damage to ground-level parts of the Pilot Fuel Enrichment Plant in Natanz.

As a result of last year’s attack, electricity to the basement floor at Natanz, where the centrifuges were stored, was also cut off. This step is considered effective in disrupting underground operational systems.
