Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – An Israeli parliament member opens his voice about Iran’s nuclear threat. This was previously the basis for why the United States (US) and Israel attacked Iran on February 28.
I gave wawancara dengan laman to Russia RT, Ofer Cassif, said security is not the driver of war. But rather “political calculations”.
It should be noted that Ofer Cassif is the only Jewish member of the Arab-majority Hadash party. He has emerged as one of the few members of parliament to openly oppose the war.
He provided a highly critical assessment of the motives, timing, and likely course of the war. “The real reason behind this aggression is the political and economic interests of the Israeli government and the United States government, the (Donald) Trump administration,” he said, quoted Friday (6/3/2025).
He linked this to Prime Minister (PM) Israel Netanyahu‘s statement in June, after the first attack on Iran, which was also assisted by the US. Netanyahu, he said, said that “We have achieved a historic victory… eliminating Iran’s nuclear project and its missile industry”.
“This has nothing to do with threats, as I just mentioned,” he said, claiming that he did not have any sympathy for the Iranian regime and even opposed it.
“This is completely related to economic and political interests, including the personal interests of Netanyahu, who wants to declare early elections and present himself as Israel’s savior before the Iranian people and the entire region,” he said.
According to him, Netanyahu is afraid of being jailed, alluding to a number of legal scandals between the PM and his family in Israel.
“He is afraid of going to prison. He knows that once he loses political power, he may soon be behind bars because of the ongoing trial against him,” he added.
“That’s the real reason behind his rhetoric. He’s not saving the world from radical Islam. Moreover, I don’t believe radical Islam is the main problem facing the world today. Of course, fanatical Islam is a problem, as is any other fanaticism. But I don’t think it’s any worse than the fanatical evangelicals in the United States or the so-called religious Zionist fanaticism in Israel,” he explained.
Specifically for Trump, he also mentioned the President’s desire to postpone the US mid-term elections which were supposed to be held in October. Because the election war could be postponed to June 2026.
“The timing of the aggression serves the interests of Netanyahu and Trump, especially their personal interests,” he said.
“As I mentioned, there are midterm elections in the United States, and the elections here were supposed to be held in October but it looks like they might be pushed back to June. Unfortunately, these two leaders and the administration around them believe that such aggression will benefit them electorally,” he stressed.
Who Can Stop the War
He also said that the party most likely to stop the war was the American people themselves. If the US public, polled to oppose the war, took to the streets, the war might end.
“Especially if within the Republican Party base, there are very clear public indications of opposition to such aggression. Trump, especially as the midterm elections approach, will probably stop the war for his own sake. Just like Netanyahu, he also only cares about himself,” he stressed.
“So the key is in the hands of the American public. If they take to the streets or put enough pressure on Trump and his administration, I think this aggression can be stopped,” he said again.
