Papua Prime Minister Nugini James Marape and Australian Prime Minister Antony Albanese signed the agreement in Canberra.
Marape denied the agreement was established because of the geopolitical situation, especially the rivalry of the United States and China in the Asia Pacific region.
“[Perjanjian ini disusun] Based on geography, history, and eternal reality in the environment, “Marape said to the media crew in the Al Jazeera report, quoting Australian media.
He then associated this agreement with the fence in front of the house.
“This is about one bigger fence that secures two houses that have their own yard,” Marape said, quoted from Al Jazera.
Furthermore, the PM emphasized that Papua New Guinea established good relations with other countries and advocated peace wherever they were involved, as far as foreign relations.
Meanwhile, Albanese said the agreement stated very clearly that there would be a “interoperability” between the “defense assets” of the two neighboring countries.
“Our biggest asset is our people,” Albanese said.
Australian media ABC reports that the agreement also contains joint action if one of the countries is in danger or being attacked.
“Each party recognizes that armed attacks on one of the parties in the Pacific will endanger peace and security from each other as well as the Pacific security,” the agreement said according to the documents reviewed ABC.
“And promise to act together to face the danger together, according to the constitutional process.”
In addition, through the agreement the two countries will share the same rights as the current members of the Five Eyes agreement.
Five Eyes is a collaboration between Australia with Canada, New Zealand, Britain and the US in the field of intelligence.
Last week, the Nugini PM Office stated that the agreement would open the road for 10,000 citizens in charge of the Australian Defense Force.
Beyond that, Papua New Guinea does have a target of building defense forces up to 7,000 troops.
The signing of the PUKPUK agreement took place several weeks after Papua New Guinea celebrated 50 years of independence from Australia.
Australia lately targeted defense agreements with countries in the Pacific region such as Fiji and Tuvalu.
