IKEA Sleep Report Reveals Many Australians Rely on Medication to Fall Asleep

A striking revelation from the IKEA Sleep Report indicates that one in five Australians regularly relies on medication to sleep, with eight percent resorting to pills nightly.

This alarming finding is part of a comprehensive study conducted by IKEA, examining the sleep patterns of over 55,000 individuals across 57 global markets, including Australia.

The report, based on insights from six experts, aims to uncover the best practices for restful sleep and how to improve sleep environments.

“By analyzing the habits in well-rested regions, we can identify universal strategies to ensure better sleep,” stated Belén Frau, IKEA Retail’s Global Communications Manager. “Consistent bedtimes, clear spaces, and optimal sleep settings are all crucial.”

The IKEA Sleep Score: A Universal Measure

The research yielded the IKEA Sleep Score, a metric ranging from zero to 100, reflecting overall sleep quality. This index considers five factors: morning restfulness, sleep duration, and flow.

While the global score stood at 63, Australia’s score was lower at 58. The highest sleep quality was observed in mainland China with a score of 74, while Norway and the United States came in last, neck and neck at 56 and 57, respectively.

Australia ranked fifth last, with Ireland and Sweden following closely behind.

Insufficient Sleep: A Global Issue

On average, participants across nations are depriving themselves of one hour and twenty minutes of sleep nightly—equivalent to twenty full days of missed sleep annually.

In Australia, 33 percent of respondents reported experiencing poor sleep, with 21 percent waking up feeling tired each morning.

Forty-two percent of Australians get six hours or less of sleep, with an average shortfall of nearly 90 minutes between actual and desired sleep times.

One in five people expressed concern about their sleep quantity.

Barriers to Restful Sleep

The most significant obstacle to good sleep is stress, with 20 percent of respondents citing it. Medical conditions (15 percent) and anxiety disorders (12 percent) also impede sleep.

Medication usage for sleep is prevalent, with 22 percent of Australians relying on pills, and eight percent doing so daily. These figures exceed the global averages of 19 percent and five percent, respectively.

Bedroom Habits: Modern Challenges

The prevalence of electronics in the bedroom is another concern. Seventy percent of Australians use their phones in bed, and 25 percent work on laptops or tablets before sleeping.

Tina Stilleborn, IKEA’s Range Area Manager for beds and mattresses, noted that sleep quality is a critical aspect of well-being. “We aim to reduce the time spent struggling to sleep and increase the quality of restful sleep. Good sleep makes life easier.”

IKEA’s bed and mattress range was developed through consumer research involving over 300 home visits, addressing various sleep challenges.

The Six Essentials for Better Sleep

The bed and mattress manufacturer believes in six key factors influencing sleep quality: comfort, light, temperature, sound, air quality, and decluttering.

To address these, IKEA’s current and future sleep product line includes everything from appropriate mattresses to air purifiers and organizational solutions.

Fredrika Inger, IKEA of Sweden’s Managing Director, highlighted the company’s dedication to improving how people sleep. “By innovating our sleep solutions to be long-lasting, sustainable, comfortable, and affordable, we strive to enhance the quality of life for millions globally.”

Christian Benedict, a neuroscientist at Uppsala University, emphasized the critical role of sleep in overall health. “For me, sleep is a reflection of your health.”

Groups at Risk: Children and Vulnerable Populations

The report found that certain groups have poorer sleep quality. For example, women with young children score 51 out of 100, people with disabilities score 45, and those experiencing financial insecurity score 46.

Preferences and Solutions

Despite the challenges, a significant portion of Australians prioritize sleep, with 28 percent preferring an early night over social activities. To improve sleep, 20 percent set a consistent bedtime, 11 percent exercise regularly, and 10 percent practice relaxation techniques.

Based on the findings, several strategies can help enhance sleep quality:

  • Reduce electronic device usage before sleep.
