Rafael Grossi cautions that military action could backfire, strengthening Iran’s resolve to develop nuclear weapons.
the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, has cautioned against potential attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, emphasizing that such actions could be counterproductive. Speaking to i24news, Grossi noted the facilities are heavily fortified, requiring “a very, very destructive force to damage them.”
In an interview with the “Jerusalem Post,” Grossi stated, “An attack could have an amalgamation effect, which, I say it very clearly, would consolidate the determination of Iran to strive for a nuclear weapon or out of the nuclear weapon locking contract.” He added that this assessment was based on direct communication with Iranian officials.
grossi has urged Tehran to increase clarity regarding its nuclear program. While Iran maintains that its nuclear activities are solely for civilian purposes, Western governments are concerned that the Iranian leadership intends to develop nuclear weapons.
IAEA’s Monitoring Gap
Grossi highlighted the IAEA’s diminished oversight capabilities due to Iran’s reduced cooperation. “We lost the view, but the activities have never stopped,” he stated, indicating a gap in knowledge about the progress of Iran’s nuclear program.
“An attack could have an amalgamation effect, which, I say it very clearly, would consolidate the determination of Iran to strive for a nuclear weapon.”
In 2015, Iran agreed to significant restrictions on its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of Western sanctions. Though, in 2018, then-President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the agreement, leading Iran to resume its nuclear activities and limit cooperation with the IAEA.
Currently, the United States and Iran are engaged in negotiations to establish a new agreement to limit the nuclear program. While Donald Trump indicated that discussions would continue on Thursday, reports suggest that talks may also occur over the weekend.Trump has previously threatened Iran with military action if a deal is not reached, and Israel is reportedly preparing for a potential attack.
