Bearing Witness: A Book “With Gaza”
A collaborative project between the French Jewish Union for Peace (UJFP) and Gazan civil society, particularly farmers, has culminated in a powerful testament to resilience amidst ongoing conflict. This initiative, born from a seminar in July 2024, seeks to document and amplify the experiences of those organizing emergency aid within displaced persons camps in Gaza. The resulting book, distinct from a mere account *on* gaza, aims to be a narrative *with* gaza, weaving together reports and stories of daily resistance.
the Relentless Reality: A Humanitarian Crisis Unfolds
As October 2023, the Gaza Strip has been gripped by what many observers describe as a devastating conflict, exceeding even the intensity of the 1948 Nakba. The impact has been all-encompassing, affecting every facet of life, from infrastructure to the well-being of its inhabitants. Reports indicate widespread destruction, including the targeting of hospitals and the killing of journalists. Concerns about organized famine and mass displacement are rampant. Tragically, women and children constitute approximately 70% of the tens of thousands of casualties.
This war continues, and it is indeed the longest war that the Gaza Strip has known as the Nakba in 1948, and it is the most fierce and bloody war. This war touched everything in the Gaza Strip, stones, trees and people, and it completely affected all aspects of life.
Abu Amir, UJFP Correspondent in Gaza
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that over 1.7 million people in Gaza, more than 75% of the population, have been displaced. Access to essential services like healthcare, clean water, and food remains severely restricted, exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation.
dehumanization: A Call to Conscience
The project raises profound questions about the erosion of conscience in the face of such suffering. The authors grapple with the collective responsibility to confront dehumanization, a process they describe as a gradual stripping away of empathy and connection. They emphasize the urgent need to challenge this process, recognizing that the struggle for Palestine raises worldwide questions about justice, freedom, and the illusion of neutrality.
The core question remains: Who have we become, have we lost our conscience?
This introspection underscores the book’s purpose: to reignite awareness and inspire action against the ongoing dehumanization.
Resistance as a Blueprint for the Future
Despite the immense challenges, the book highlights the daily acts of resistance that offer a path toward a more hopeful future. By documenting these experiences, the authors aim to provide essential benchmarks for living a meaningful life, even in the face of adversity. The organization of daily life, they argue, contributes to shifting power dynamics and building a foundation for a possible future.
