RiverRock, Frank Lloyd Wright’s last residential home design
The Marvel of Frank Lloyd Wright’s RiverRock: A Cleveland Gem Revealed
Construction has just finished on a remarkable Frank Lloyd Wright house in Willoughby Hills, Ohio. Dubbed “RiverRock,” this is believed to be Wright’s last residential home design, and its completion is nothing short of extraordinary. This article explores the backstory and the vision behind this architectural masterpiece.
The Journey of RiverRock
In the 1950s, Louis Penfield commissioned Wright to design a home overlooking the Chagrin River for his family. However, plans for the construction were put on hold when the home faced imminent destruction due to the proposed I-90 road project. Penfield then requested a second design for a new location, only for Wright to respond that he had enough work for a lifetime.
Following Wright’s death in 1959, the plans for the unused design, identified as Project #5909, were discovered in his office. They would remain unused until 2018 when Sarah Dykstra purchased the Louis Penfield House, complete with the Wright plans.
Bringing Wright’s Vision to Life
With Project #5909 in hand, Dykstra and her partners embarked on a decades-long project to realize Wright’s dream. Their mission was to adhere to the original blueprint while ensuring compliance with modern building codes and regulations. Every change made was done discreetly, preserving the integrity of Wright’s original design.
As Dykstra stated, “When we set out to build this home, we gave a mandate to the professional team involved: if you must change something due to current building regulations, code, products, etc., do so under the ‘skin’ so the house will look exactly the same. The design and the artistic aspect of this home should remain the same as intended in 1959. We are thrilled our team of construction professionals delivered on this promise and are proud to present a beautiful 2025 build from Wright’s 1959 plans.”
