A few days ago, Netflix added Geronimo – The Blood of the Apaches to its streaming offering. The western, which was published in 1993, is also known in this country under the title Geronimo – A Legend and is based on true events. Directed by Walter Hill, historical and military films merge.

Geronimo on Netflix: A dark look into history

The plot of the film revolves around a well-known figure in American history: Apache chief Geronimo (Wes Studi). This accomplished in the 1880s Resistance to the army the US government, which wanted to relocate his people to a reservation. However, the soil there turns out to be dry and not very fertile.

Geronimo doesn’t want to be satisfied with the life that is being forced on him and his tribe by foreign hands and turns against the soldiers. The determined chief clashes with young Lieutenant Gatewood (Jason Patric) and Brigadier General George Crook (Gene Hackman), among others.

What particularly distinguishes Geronimo – The Blood of the Apaches is this differentiated representation of the protagonist and the indigenous population. Walter Hill didn’t want to make a western that relied on a clear good-evil schema and allowed the characters to easily be pigeonholed into moral categories. The story is more complex.

On Netflix: A western that is anything but romantic

This is an important point in the Western context. Far too often things are portrayed in a romanticized way or completely distorted. Of course, Geronimo – The Blood of the Apaches is also a consciously cinematic reappraisal certain creative freedom in terms of dramaturgy. Nevertheless, the film stands out from many of its genre colleagues.

Geronimo himself is also critically questioned. Opposite the Los Angeles Times Wes Studi explained the approach at the time of the film’s release as follows:

We provide [Geronimo] Don’t put him on a pedestal and say he never did anything wrong. Is war brutal, he killed women and children. But he responded to what was being done to his people by the US government. He was a stubborn man trying to preserve a way of life.

Although Walter Hill is known for action films like Driver, The Warriors and Only 48 Hours, he tries to do what is shown not too sensational to stage. Rather, his focus is on depicting Geronimo’s environment and the influence that the military’s brutal actions had on the course of history.

Geronimo – The Blood of the Apaches has been streaming on Netflix since November 1, 2025.
