The newest member of the Columbia City Council, Vera Elwood, is scheduled to receive a ceremonial oath of office at the beginning of Monday night’s meeting at city hall.
Vera Elwood was officially sworn in last week, having won August’s election against businessman Ken Rice by a margin of over 300 votes. Both Elwood and Rice actively campaigned by going door-to-door throughout the ward during the summer, and each raised significant funds for their campaigns.
According to Vera Elwood,she aims to contribute to building “a Columbia for all.” She also has concerns regarding outsourcing. In July, it was reported that a labor union representing the city’s snowplow drivers, bus drivers, and garbage collectors stated that Columbia paid approximately $5.1 million in outsourcing and overtime during fiscal year 2024.
Columbia’s second ward encompasses the Park DeVille, Vanderveen, and Parkade neighborhoods.
