As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues, the need for effective international mediation has become increasingly critical. the International Organisation for Mediation,which launched in Hong Kong with 32 founding signatories,aims to support article 33 of the United Nations Charter,which focuses on peaceful resolution of disputes. This institution arrives at a crucial time, with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine entering its fourth year.

Despite recent peace talks in Istanbul, there has been no significant progress, and the conflict remains deadlocked. Neither side seems capable of achieving a decisive victory on the battlefield. The ongoing imposition of sanctions, the delivery of weapons, and escalating rhetoric are exacerbating global divisions.

however, a path to peace may still be possible if key issues are addressed. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated a willingness to engage in direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Similarly, Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, has expressed Moscow’s support for a UN-led peace initiative, suggesting a potential opening for dialog.

Significant divisions remain between the parties. Efforts led by the United States to broker a ceasefire have been unsuccessful, largely due to the complexities of the situation.

Challenges to Peace and Potential Solutions

Likewise, ukraine cannot agree to a peace settlement on Russia’s terms, which would involve disarmament and geopolitical isolation. A combination of European and non-European peacekeepers will likely be essential in alleviating the concerns that have prolonged the conflict.
