Britney Spears has resumed communication with her children Sean Preston and Jayden James after a prolonged estrangement marked by family tensions and public accusations.
The information was confirmed by Kevin Federline, the singer’s ex-husband and father of the young people, during a recent appearance on the Talk Shop Live program. According to the former dancer, the young people, now aged 20 and 19, had decided to cut off contact with their mother due to “shocking things” they had witnessed at home.
Federline stated that, after the publication of Spears’ autobiography, titled You Thought You Knew, the artist’s children resumed dialogue with her. Although he said he had not spoken directly with Britney, he indicated that he was aware that “she has spoken to our children,” which he considered a positive development. The interpreter’s ex-husband expressed that he hopes that this process will allow ties to be rebuilt: “I really hope that, despite all this confusion, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.”
Distancing marked by worrying episodes

On multiple occasions, Federline has offered details about the deterioration of the relationship between Spears and her children. As previously stated, the young people had decided to distance themselves from the singer after observing behavior that he described as “worrying” and even “terrifying.”
During an interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored, he explained that one of his children called him fearing that “mom was going to die” after witnessing situations that alarmed him.
Although the former dancer avoided delving into the specific details, he argued that they themselves should decide whether or not to tell what they witnessed. However, he did mention that Sean Preston decided not to see his mother again after a visit at the beginning of the year, while Jayden James also stopped seeing her in recent months. Federline pointed out that, according to his children, the fear was associated with possible substance abuse problems, a topic about which he said: “Absolutely.”
For its part, the Daily Mail published images and videos showing Spears in an apparently unstable state in a luxury restaurant, and another in which she was driving in the wrong direction on a highway, which would have increased concerns among those around her.
Sources cited by the media suggested that the content of Federline’s book would have contributed to a “downward spiral” in the singer’s emotional state.
Autobiography that reopened family wounds
After years of silence, Federline narrated in his memoirs various episodes that, according to him, exemplify Spears’ erratic behavior during their family life. In the book, she claims that the artist hit her son Sean Preston in the face, offered seafood to Jayden despite knowing his allergy, and, at times, wished for the death of her own children. She also recounted an episode in which Spears allegedly stood in front of the children’s room holding a knife, as well as another in which, according to her version, she used cocaine while breastfeeding them.
The publication provoked a strong reaction from the singer, who expressed feeling “fed up” with what she called “the constant gaslighting” of Federline. In an Instagram post, she described the contents of the book as extremely painful, especially because of the impact it could have on public perception of her.
Spears’ team of representatives also spoke out against the allegations, alleging that Federline and others were “benefiting at her expense.” They claimed that the singer’s ex-husband used to receive child support, and that the payments had ended, hinting that the memoir could be motivated, in part, by financial interests.
Tensions after divorce and guardianship
The marriage between Britney Spears and Kevin Federline came to an end in 2007, and a year later the singer was placed under legal guardianship that lasted for thirteen years. During that period, Federline gained majority custody of the children, who later moved with him to Hawaii. Although there were attempts at reconciliation between mother and children in previous years, the rapprochement failed to consolidate.
In 2022, Federline publicly confirmed that the young people were estranged from their mother. Since then, efforts to rebuild the relationship have been on and off. However, the recent contact between Britney and her children could mark a turning point amid the tension generated by the former dancer’s memories.
Federline assured that his children “love their mother” and that he has always wanted them to maintain a strong bond with her. He declared that, although many people believe that his book aggravates the situation, his intention is to do everything possible to facilitate reconciliation. “If I have to be the bad guy for them to have a relationship with their mother, I will be,” he said.
Possible path towards rebuilding the bond
Despite the accusations, cross statements and conflictive episodes, Federline believes that it is possible to rebuild the family bond. He explained that his children are “trying to find a way” to get closer to Spears and that the recent communication is an encouraging step.
While the media environment closely follows the artist’s every move, Spears has not publicly responded to the most recent claims. The singer’s representative has not offered additional statements following the Daily Mail’s latest query.
