Latvian champion “Mogo”/RSU celebrated victory in the second match of the second round of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Continental Cup in France on Saturday.
The Latvian team beat the Italian team “Cortina” with 3:0 (0:0, 2:0, 1:0).
At the end of the second period, “Mogo”/RSU was led by Gints Meija, who scored the majority of goals, but 16 seconds before the break, Jānis Zemītis doubled the lead – 2:0.
Kaspars Daugaviņš scored the last goal of the game 83 seconds before the end of the match after Meija’s pass, sending the puck into an empty net.
Kārlis Mežsargs played the “dry” game with 26 saved shots.
In the second game today, “Ducs” from Angers and “Gheorgheni” from Romania will meet.
On Friday, in the first match, “Mogo”/RSU lost 4:6 to the home team “Ducs”, while “Cortina” beat Romania’s “Gheorgheni” 5:3.
In the final game on Sunday, which will start at At 15:30 Latvian time, the Latvian champion will meet with “Gheorgheni”.
The top two teams will advance to the finals in Great Britain, which will feature host Nottingham Panthers, Eskemen Torpedo from Kazakhstan, Katowice GKS from Poland and Herning Blue Fox from Denmark in mid-January.
In the first round, “Mogo”/RSU won the teams of “Narva”, “Skautafelag” of Akureyri and “Hockey punks” of Vilnius.
The IIHF Continental Cup is the second largest European ice hockey club tournament, with 14 teams participating. All team competitions start according to ranking.
In the previous season, the Cardiff Devils representing Wales won the IIHF Continental Cup, but Mogo/RSU did not make it past the second round.
