Australia is the first country to introduce such a ban.
Children under the age of 16 in Australia are no longer allowed to open accounts on social networks, including TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, X and YouTube.
Platforms are given one year to develop solutions for the introduction of the age limit. In cases of non-compliance with the ban, the platforms face severe fines.
Messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, e-mail, online games and various educational tools are given discounts as children and teenagers may need them for school, recreation or other reasons.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he was proud of the ban. In his opinion, it is one of the biggest social and cultural changes that has happened in Australia.
The new law will help provide children with a normal childhood, give parents peace of mind and serve as an example for other countries, the Prime Minister believes.
Countries considering a similar law are expected to closely monitor the implementation of the ban in Australia.
Critics say the ban is disproportionate and it has already been challenged in the Supreme Court. Many are convinced that teenagers will simply move on to other services where the risks are even more difficult to control.
“It’s not going to be perfect. It’s a big change,” Albanese admitted. “The success is that it’s happening. The success is the fact that we’re having this discussion.”
