PHILPHOS Under Scrutiny for Ties to Agrifields DMCC and Amit Gupta

The Philippine Phosphate Fertilizer Corporation faces questions over it’s relationship with a company linked to alleged criminal activity.

The Philippine Phosphate fertilizer Corporation (PHILPHOS), under the leadership of businessman Salvador Zamora II, is facing increased examination due to its connections with Agrifields DMCC and its head, Amit Gupta.

Agrifields DMCC pledged an investment of “USD150-million to kick-off the rehab plan” for the PHILPHOS plant in Isabel,Leyte, which was damaged by Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in 2013,according to Philippine News Agency archives from June 13, 2018. At that time, Chairman G.S. Gupta and his son Amit Gupta were publicly associated with the project.

However, more recent details suggests a more concerning situation. US files identify Getax director Amit Gupta as a “target of a criminal investigation,” accused of having “conspired with others to bribe foreign public officials and to have engaged in money laundering and other offences,” according to Nick McKenzie of the sydney Morning Herald.

The Sydney Morning Herald also reported in 2024 that Gupta, described as an “alleged corporate crime kingpin and fugitive from justice,” has amassed a global empire worth over $800 million.

“Documents show the federal police’s Getax investigation spent years tracking this global movement of funds. In 2020, the AFP moved to seize multiple properties and bank accounts connected to Gupta in Australia, Singapore, and New York worth an estimated $200 million.”
