alstom, a leading rail transport manufacturer, has been awarded a seven-year extension to its contract for operating and maintaining the AirTrain system at John F.Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York. The agreement, valued at approximately €479 million (around $518 million), ensures the continued smooth operation of this crucial transportation link. The contract also includes an option for a further three-year extension.

AirTrain’s Role in Easing Congestion

The JFK AirTrain plays a pivotal role in mitigating traffic congestion around one of the world’s busiest airports. It seamlessly connects all passenger terminals with airport parking facilities, hotel shuttle pick-up points, the car rental center, and the broader New York public transportation network. This integrated system is essential for efficient passenger flow and reduces reliance on vehicular traffic within the airport perimeter.

Scope of Alstom’s Responsibilities

Under the terms of the extended contract, Alstom is responsible for ensuring the AirTrain’s continuous operation, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This encompasses complete maintenance of the entire system, including the fleet of 32 automated light metro trains, platform screen doors, guideways, power distribution systems, washing facilities, signaling infrastructure, and associated installations.

Last year alone, approximately 25 million passengers used the AirTrain, translating to an average daily ridership exceeding 68,000 individuals.
