Zelenskyy: Ukraine Energy Sector Reform After Corruption

by Archynetys World Desk

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has promised to transform Ukraine’s state-owned energy companies. Zelensky announced this after the corruption scandal involving the Ukrainian energy sector broke out, the BBC reported. According to the investigators, around 100 million US dollars (approx. HUF 33 billion) could have been embezzled in the country at war with Russia, where power outages are regular in several places.

In an X-post on Saturday, Zelenskiy wrote that in addition to the financial audit of the companies involved, their management will also be restructured. The Ukrainian nuclear energy company Enerhoatom, which is at the center of the corruption scandal, will have a new supervisory board within a week, the president wrote.

The Ukrainian president’s circle of trust was also involved in the scandal. On Saturday, an arrest request was submitted against the former Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine, Oleksiy Chernysov. The 48-year-old politician was also affected by Enerhoatom’s expanding corruption case. Ukraine’s anti-corruption authority suspects that Chernysov received 1.2 million dollars (400 million forints) and 100,000 euros (385 million forints) in cash as a member of the corruption network. Because of the case, Chernysov is suspected of abuse of office.
