Speaking to Yalda Hakim, a Sky News journalist at the Presidential Palace in Kiev, the Ukrainian president was asked about the Russian -US leaders’ summit in Alaska last month, or he thinks it was a mistake.
“I think it gave Putin a lot,” he said. – “And I believe that if it were a tripartite meeting, we would have achieved some results.”
It is claimed that during their summit in Alaska, the Russian leader told Trump that he wanted the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk and in exchange would abandon other Ukraine -controlled territories controlled by his troops.
Since then, the US president has resumed threats with sanctions on Russia and urged NATO countries to terminate Russian oil purchase to complete the war.
Russian attacks in Ukraine also continued, and in recent days the summit of Poland and Romania has been invaded, and the proposed summit of V. Zelensky and Putin has not taken place.
Asked whether Putin was trying to deceive Mr Trump, Zelensky agreed.
He added: “Putin does everything he can to avoid sanctions to prevent the United States and a short one to impose on him, and if the sanctions are delayed, the Russians will be better prepared.”
Mr Zelensky also said that Putin was “wanting to get out of political isolation” at the Alaska summit and believes that he had to pay more for a meeting with the US president.
“He had to fail in this war and stop,” he said. “But instead he was liberated from the insulation. He received photos with President Trump.”
“He was involved in a public dialogue, and I think it opens Putin’s door to other summit and formats because it is, and we see, observe, and I don’t think he paid for it.”
The Ukrainian president continued to claim that Putin “should pay, first, because he started the war, and secondly because (he) is trying to find a way out of isolation.”
Mr Zelensky added that “it is very important not to give Putin such a space, otherwise he will not feel the obligation to break the war.”
“He is at war, and everyone is trying to stop him by arguing, asking, but instead, he should use force,” he said. “He understands the strength. This is his language. This is the language he understands.”
“He does not speak many languages, but it is the language of power he understands, just as the Russian, his native language – and we are very asked to do so in European and US countries.”
“Yes, they take certain steps like sanctions, but need to be done more and faster.”
