“I think that the issue of merit concerns all professional categories, so I don’t think there is anyone exempt from this dynamic. This applies to journalists, it applies to managers and it also applies to politicians who are evaluated by the people. I don’t see why the category of magistrates shouldn’t also be subjected to evaluation dynamics that express their merit”. The Minister for Public Administration said this Paolo Zangrillo during the ANSA forum.
“There is a body that evaluates magistrates – he explained – which is the Superior Council of the Judiciary, but if we look at and compare what has happened over time it seems to me that there are some inconsistencies here too. What am I referring to? Between 1992-2024 in Italy there were more than 80 thousand people who were in prison and who did not commit the crime and were therefore acquitted. Magistrates have people’s lives in their hands, so if they make mistakes too, like all other categories of workers, they must be evaluated. I must say that these are the facts that tell us that today the judges’ evaluation system is not effective, because it does not correctly represent reality”.
If the no vote were to win in the referendum on justice, “I don’t see why the government should resign. This government is a stable government, it is a recognized government, it is a government that I believe has worked well in recent years, then the citizens will evaluate it”, added Zangrillo. “I am a firm supporter of yes – explained Zangrillo – and not because my party supports yes, but because as a citizen I am absolutely convinced of the need to have separate careers, which then represent only part of the justice reform. I haven’t heard the reasons for no yet, because it seems to me that the no always throws it into politics and is transforming this referendum consultation into a consultation on the government”.
The latest contractual renewals were signed without the CGIL and “I dare to say that it was not a choice of the government but of the CGIL”, said the minister, speaking of the 2022-2024 contractual round and mentioning the next one for the three-year period 2025-27. “Now I don’t want to appear too optimistic – he said -, but we have already had two or three meetings and I must say that the attitude of the CGIL today is much more inclined towards dialogue. So, let’s say that I am optimistic about the possibility of also recovering the membership of the CGIL in the renewal. I repeat, the trade union union has its own value”.
