WhatsApp Security: New High Security Mode Explained

by drbyos

Strict account security settings are now coming to WhatsApp. These are numerous privacy options activated with a single button. For example, the mechanism blocks media and attachments from unknown participants. Other features include a disabled link preview and muted calls from strangers.

WhatsApp recommends only using high security mode if there is an acute risk of cyber attacks. You can find the feature in the latest beta versions of the messenger for Android and iOS.

As by far the most used messenger, WhatsApp is a convenient but also vulnerable method of contact. Shady characters are increasingly trying to use tricks to get users’ personal data or money. The chat program already offers you numerous settings to reduce the risk. However, these are fragmented in the menu and it is tedious to activate all the desired options. With strict account security settings, you can quickly put WhatsApp into a lockdown mode.

WABetaInfo reports that the feature is integrated and activated in beta version 2.25.36.15 for Android and beta version 25.36.10.70 for iOS. Because the messenger carries out the activation in waves, it may take some time until all users gain access. You can check if High Security Mode is available by going to WhatsApp’s settings. There should be the entry “Strict account security settings” under the menu item/Advanced at the bottom. The communication tool describes all the measures included. The protection mechanism is activated via a button.

What does WhatsApp’s new high security mode do?

As already mentioned, the function blocks media and attachments from unknown users, deactivates link previews and mutes calls from unknown participants. Furthermore, only your contacts are allowed to add you to a group and view your profile information. Calls receive IP address protection, which has a negative impact on call quality due to server forwarding. If a participant’s security code changes, a notification will also appear.

Last but not least is two-factor verification. If you re-register the number in WhatsApp, a PIN is required.
