A Punk-Infused Celebration of Bridal Fashion
Vivienne Westwood’s latest bridal collection, a fusion of ancient elegance and rebellious spirit, made its debut at Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week. Andreas Kronthaler, the Creative director, presented a collection that he describes as a pot pourri of this, past and future.
The runway show, held at the historic university of Barcelona, showcased designs that boldly blend punk aesthetics with the grandeur of historical fashion, creating a unique and unforgettable bridal experience.
Inspiration Rooted in History and catalan Culture
Kronthaler emphasized the brand’s long-standing connection to bridal wear, stating, Bridal has always been an critically important component for the maison, as I started working with Vivienne in the early 90s.
He further explained that the city of Barcelona itself served as a primary muse: We are pleased to present our first parade of wedding dresses in this fantastic city. the grandeur of his avenues and his architecture were our first source of inspiration.
The collection features a distinctive Rose Print, derived from 18th-century botanical watercolors by Pierre-Joseph Redouté. This classic motif is juxtaposed with vibrant orange flowers, a direct homage to the University of Barcelona’s courtyard. These floral elements, symbolizing purity and beauty, are frequently enough paired with delicate tulle, adding a touch of romanticism to the overall designs.
Corsetry and Rebellious Silhouettes Take Center Stage
True to the Vivienne Westwood ethos, corsetry plays a pivotal role in the collection. These daring and rebellious garments offer a nod to the brand’s signature “messy” aesthetic, challenging traditional bridal norms. The incorporation of tailoring adds a masculine edge, further blurring the lines between conventional expectations.
Fabrics and textures: A Story of Time and Elegance
The collection boasts a diverse range of fabrics, including linen, cotton,Slavic Georgette, and chiffon, carefully chosen to evoke a sense of timelessness and the impression of garments worn and loved over time. Light organza, delicate lace, and soft pink duchesse from Italy further enhance the collection’s romantic and luxurious feel.
Kronthaler emphasizes the narrative power of each design, stating, Each character tells a story.
A standout piece is the Madame de Pompadour dress, inspired by François boucher’s 1756 painting. This iconic design, presented in white and modeled by Simonetta Gianfelici, embodies the collection’s blend of historical inspiration and contemporary flair. Vivienne would have loved him. It was his favorite dress ever
Kronthaler added.

Bridging the Gap: Industry and Education Unite
Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week recently witnessed a unique collaboration between the iconic Vivienne Westwood brand and several prestigious design institutions. This partnership, involving the European Design Institute (IED), LCI Barcelona, and Edsi higher school of design, aimed to integrate student creativity and sustainable design principles into the heart of the bridal fashion industry.
Fostering creativity and Sustainable Practices
The collaboration extended beyond a simple showcase. Vivienne Westwood and Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week worked closely with the IED and LCI Barcelona to develop project briefs and conduct tutoring workshops. This ensured that the students’ work was deeply connected to the multifaceted aspects of the show, emphasizing creativity, low-impact design, and artistic expression. This initiative aligns with the growing global demand for sustainable fashion. According to a recent report by McKinsey, consumers are increasingly seeking eco-friendly and ethically produced clothing, with a notable portion willing to pay a premium for sustainable options.
Student Designs Take Center Stage
The culmination of this collaborative effort was the presentation of student designs at the Barcelona bridal fashion fair. A curated selection of models showcasing the students’ creations was featured during the Vivienne Westwood show, providing invaluable exposure to the emerging talents.
