The Washington Post quoted informed sources as saying that American forces are preparing to issue orders for a possible attack on Venezuela.
These sources said that high-level discussions are taking place regarding whether an American strike will be launched against Venezuela.
The newspaper quoted an administration official as saying that a range of options were presented to President Donald Trump.
The newspaper also quoted an informed source as saying that the fighter pilots aboard the American aircraft carrier sent to the region were studying Venezuelan air defenses.
Earlier, CBS also quoted informed sources that senior military officials presented President Trump with updated options regarding possible operations against Venezuela, and the sources revealed that the potential options included launching ground attacks.
Meanwhile, the US Army announced a military operation called “Southern Spear” to combat drug smuggling.
It is noteworthy that last August, US President Trump issued an executive order requiring increased use of the army under the pretext of combating drug cartels in Latin America.
Washington announced the sending of warships and a submarine off the coast of Venezuela, while US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the army is ready for operations, including regime change in Venezuela.
On the other hand, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, in an interview with CNN, called on the American people to unite with Venezuela for peace in the region.
On Wednesday, Maduro ordered the formation of national defense commands, while Reuters reported that Caracas had begun deploying weapons, including Russian-made equipment, and was planning guerrilla-style resistance operations in the event it was exposed to an American air or ground attack.
The attacks launched by the US military on boats in the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean, allegedly smuggling drugs, and directly targeting the people on board, sparked controversy over extrajudicial killings in the international community.
