Jakarta –
There are rumors that Giovanni van Bronckhorst will become the new coach of the Indonesian national team. PSSI General Chair Erick Thohir said this.
The Indonesian National Team coach’s seat is currently vacant after Patrick Kluivert was dismissed last month for failing to get the Garuda squad to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Several names have emerged, one of which even arrived in Indonesia last week, namely Timur Kapadze. The man from Uzbekistan went on safari in Jakarta with several football figures.

PSSI has denied that Kapadze’s arrival was not their initiative. The Kapadze rumors haven’t finished yet, another Van Bronckhorst has emerged as a potential replacement for Kluivert.
The man who is now Liverpool’s assistant manager is of Indonesian descent from his Maluku father. Coaching his ancestral country is certainly a source of pride for this 47 year old man.
Quoted by Football Insider 247, Liverpool is reportedly ready to negotiate with PSSI if they are serious about approaching Van Bronckhorst. PSSI is said to be paying compensation for Van Bronckhorst’s contract which only started last summer.
Van Bronckhorst was recruited by Arne Slot to replace John Heitinga who left for Ajax Amsterdam. Van Bronckhorst has experience as a coach at Feyenoord, Guangzhou City, Rangers and Besiktas, with a win ratio of 58 percent.
Regarding these rumors, Erick Thohir has not been able to provide further confirmation. Erick said that currently PSSI is still carrying out the process of searching for a coach.
“I don’t know yet (about Giovanni van Bronckhorst). Is he from the Netherlands again? I don’t know either,” said Erick when met by journalists at the State Palace, Tuesday (25/11/2025).
