Vietnamese media outlet Soha weighs the nation’s options amid recent football defeats and the rise of naturalized players in rival teams.
HANOI – 2025/06/12 05:24:30 – According to Vietnamese media outlet soha, replicating the naturalization strategies of the Indonesian national team and Malaysia presents critically important challenges for vietnam.
Soha suggests that while Vietnamese fans may aspire to emulate the naturalization efforts of Indonesia and Malaysia, which have actively recruited players in recent years, the reality is more complex. “Vietnamese supporters see Indonesia and Malaysia to naturalize players and then dream. Soha points out that manny naturalized players in Indonesia and Malaysia are individuals who lacked opportunities to represent their countries of origin. “It is important to add that naturalized star players from Indonesia or new Malaysian players from Europe and South America are those who do not get the chance to play for the Netherlands, Argentina and Spain so they voted in Southeast Asia.”
“Giovanni van Bronckhorst, John Heitinga, Robin van Persie also has Indonesian blood, but when they are at the peak of their careers, they all chose to use the Dutch costume,” soha noted, illustrating the preference of players with dual heritage to represent established footballing nations.

Soha also mentioned that several Vietnamese players,including Boubacar Camara and Ibrahim Maza,have previously played for the French and algerian national teams,respectively.
Vietnam recently suffered a 0-4 defeat against Malaysia, diminishing their chances of qualifying for the 2027 Asian Cup. In the previous year, Vietnam also lost two matches against the indonesian national team, with scores of 0-1 and 0-3, during the second round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
